Redfern Legal Centre (RLC)

When COVID-19 pushed Redfern Legal Centre (RLC) to move its services online, its website had to work for people on phones, people with disabilities, and people in urgent need of legal help. Morpht rebuilt the site pro bono in Drupal 9, with design agency Folk, and gave RLC staff the tools to manage it themselves.

Legal help, ready to move online

RLC's clients can now find legal information and request help online more easily, on any device.

  • 1,387 articles and 343 resources migrated from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9
  • Online intake forms that make it simpler for clients to ask for help
  • Built to WCAG 2.0 AA with semantic HTML, so the site works with assistive technologies
  • Staff manage content in-house, without paying for external support

About RLC

Drupal 10 | Convivial CXP | Web development | Content migration

RLC is a not-for-profit community legal centre, founded in 1977, working on human rights and social justice. Its focus areas include discrimination, domestic abuse, international students, and police accountability.

When COVID-19 restrictions began, RLC needed to deliver more of its services online. The site had to work well on mobile, be accessible to people with disabilities, make information easier to find, and simplify client intake.

The solution

Folk led branding and front-end design, while Morpht handled content mapping and the back-end rebuild. We built the site on Convivial, Morpht's Drupal starter site, with ready-made content types, accessibility features, and personalisation capabilities.

Drupal 9 and Convivial CXP

The old RLC website was built in Drupal 7, which was nearing end-of-life. So a key requirement of this project was the redevelopment of the site into Drupal 9.

As a starting point for the development, we implemented Convivial CXP, which is a Drupal 9 starter site for personalisation, editor experience, accessibility and integration. Convivial CXP comes with many useful content types already set up, as well as a personalisation strategy for the client’s particular needs. Using modules such as Personified, it is able to utilise the user profile to deliver personalised experiences for the users.

Editor experience

Being a not-for-profit organisation, RLC is also required to be able to manage, edit and update the website in-house and to reduce the need for external resources.

Data migration

The RLC already had quite a substantial Drupal 7 site stretching back a number of years. Using Drupal's Migrate module, we moved 1,387 articles and 343 resources from the legacy site with their structure intact.

Accessibility

Clients use their mobile as the main source for first contact with RLC and with the knowledge that 1 in 10 users have a disability of some kind, accessibility was a major requirement for this project. To ensure everyone who requires RLC’s services or is looking for information, Convivial CXP semantic HTML and components are designed for accessibility for WCAG 2.0 AA compliance.
