Australian Immunisation Handbook Catch-up Calculator (AIH)

When a child or adolescent has missed vaccines, practitioners need an accurate catch-up schedule fast. Morpht built the National Immunisation Catch-up Calculator, which applies the Australian Immunisation Handbook's rules to a patient's age, location, medical conditions, and vaccination history, and is checked by hundreds of automated tests.

Complex rules, confident recommendations

Practitioners can confidently generate catch-up schedules for every child and adolescent under 20, knowing each change to the rules is tested before release.

  • Calculates schedules across 15 antigens, 75 vaccines, and 80 business rules
  • 391 automated behavioural tests confirm every recommendation still meets the rules after each change
  • Coverage expanded in June 2024 from children under 10 to all children and adolescents under 20
  • Multiple medically at-risk conditions supported in a single calculation
  • Schedules saved as PDFs to share with medical staff and parents or guardians

About the AIH Catch-up Calculator

The patient's health comes first, so the logic must use every relevant criterion to produce accurate recommendations. The rules also change regularly as new evidence and advice become available. The calculator had to support frequent updates without compromising accuracy.

Morpht worked with Folk, a Sydney-based strategic design consultancy that led user experience (UX) and stakeholder management.

The solution

We built the calculator as a standalone web app, using Drupal concepts to structure data in JavaScript libraries. Practitioners enter age, location, medically at-risk conditions, and previous vaccinations, including those received overseas. The app applies the handbook's logic and recommends further vaccinations.

Generated PDFs

The generated vaccination schedule can then be saved as a PDF and shared with medical staff and parents/guardians.

Automated tests

With complex, changing rules, even a minor update could produce a less than optimal result. Morpht developed 391 automated behavioural tests that confirm all recommendations continue to meet the rules, and we add new tests as the rules evolve.

Continuous expansion

Over three years, we have extended the calculator with many new features. The June 2024 release added new antigens, vaccines, medical conditions, and rules, and lets practitioners select multiple at-risk conditions in one calculation.
