NSW Food Authority

The NSW Food Authority helps people across NSW stay safe from foodborne risks, and its website carries thousands of pages, notices, and public registers. Morpht moved the site to GovCMS, migrated more than 8,000 pages and files, and connected live data feeds, so food safety information is easier to find on any device.

More visitors, staying longer

The Authority now has a modern, accessible website that people use more and stay on longer.

  • 9.7% year-on-year increase in traffic
  • 44% increase in time on page
  • 6,221 HTML pages, 808 XML pages, and 1,197 files migrated from four sources using automated scripts
  • Five external data feeds powering searchable public registers of penalty notices, prosecutions, auditors, and training organisations
  • Live shellfish harvest area alerts, searchable by location
  • Moved to the latest NSW Design System in 2024 with no change to site structure or functionality

About NSW Food Authority

IA & Discovery | User experience design | Convivial for GovCMS | Drupal web development | Integrations | Accessibility

The NSW Food Authority regulates food safety across the entire NSW food supply chain. It reduces food safety risks, responds rapidly to incidents, and provides education and technical information to consumers and industry.

The Authority asked Morpht to migrate its content from the TRIM web content management system to GovCMS, refresh the design, and improve accessibility and mobile responsiveness. Content came from four sources, including a separate image server and external systems for penalty and prosecution notices.

The solution

Morpht migrated the content with automated scripts, restructured the information architecture, integrated live data feeds and registers, and refreshed the design using Convivial for GovCMS and the NSW Design System.

Restructuring the information architecture

We developed a content model that displays information in different modes and layouts. It includes four news types (such as media releases, recalls, and advisories), eight resource types (such as factsheets, guides, and policies), and dedicated types for auditors, training organisations, and notices.

Unpacking the site for migration

We examined the site setup and database to understand its content types and how they relate. Automated scripts then extracted content and pages from:

  • the site database
  • the image server
  • external systems housing penalty notices
  • the prosecution notice register

Integrated interactive tools

We integrated tools that help consumers understand food labelling and help new food businesses learn their obligations. A later application pulls in a live feed on shellfish harvest areas, so users can search and filter the status of their area.

Feeds and registers

We ingested five feeds and built searchable, filterable, sortable registers that consume and export data, including:

Shellfish harvest area alerts

A recent addition to the site is an application that consumes an external data feed about the safety and status of shellfish harvest areas. The application pulls in updates for the data feed, indexes them and surfaces the data on the site. Users can then filter and search through the feed for their relevant harvest area.

Design refresh

We started with Convivial for GovCMS, which saved time and cost, and adapted it to the NSW Design System. The result simplifies layouts while staying faithful to the brand guidelines.

NSW design system

In 2024, the Authority engaged Morpht again to move the site to the latest NSW Design System. Figma prototypes gave the Authority a realistic preview before development began, and the site's structure and functionality stayed intact.
